I can talk about the R1 for a long time, but to keep this update semi short I’ll just go into its performance as a midlayer for ice climbing. So with that out of the way I’d be willing to say that the Patagonia R1 is the most versatile midlayer. That claim really comes down to the R1 fabric and its great weight to warmth ratio.

On its own the R1 is fairly breathable, but when you encounter the elements all you’ve got to do is put on a shell and then you have a great insulating piece. There’s also a lot of versatility between the different models. The pullover hoody works great as a layering piece for any climbing activity due to its longer arms and torso. That’s the one I have the most time with.

So far this season I haven’t used the R1 for layering for ice climbing, instead I’ve been using it for some winter trail running. And I’ve been super happy with it. Before the season’s over I’ll definitely get a day or two back in the R1, most likely if we get another cold snap.
